The Bizagi Experience Matrix: How Total Experiences Can Transform Enterprise App Development

Modern enterprise applications are complex. But building them doesn’t have to be. In an industry first, Bizagi’s new Experience Matrix gives you a single, easy-to-understand view of your components all in one place, hinged around experiences for both the creators and the end-users.

It allows you to compose apps top-down, bottom-up or with a blended model.

According to Gartner’s 2021 Digital Business Acceleration Study, companies’ primary objectives are to enhance customer experiences (58%) and improve employee productivity (57%). This demonstrates that they want to improve experiences both internally and externally.

The apex of this is something that Gartner is calling ‘Total Experience’, which it describes as “how to use technology and interactions to enhance, empower, and embolden both customers and employees."

Here’s how the Bizagi Experience Matrix helps to offer Total Experiences in enterprise app development.

1. Speed up development with building blocks

Our Experience Matrix provides a low-code approach to application development. It enables you to significantly speed up the time it takes to build and launch an app by doing much of the component building for users. It generates experiences ready for customization in an easy-to-use dashboard, so all you have to do is define the permissions for each user.

The Bizagi Experience Matrix is based on four simple building blocks: data, flows, personas, and reports. Data refers to the business objects that are interacted with. Flows are small processes that define the interactions with the data; e.g. action a process, create new records or view information. Personas are the groups of stakeholders who will be using the application. And finally, reports show a summary of how the data and interactions are being used.

The key component that significantly speeds up development in the Experience Matrix is the ‘Generate App’ button. Once you have assembled a framework using the building blocks, all you have to do is hit this button. It automatically creates a new app ready for customization in the Bizagi App Designer. You can come back to the Experience Matrix and make updates as many times as you need and the changes will be reflected in the App Designer whenever you click the ‘Update App’ button.

This makes the experience of app design easier, and enhances the experience for end users as they can see updates in the app faster than they would with traditional app development.

2. Guardrails to govern developers

These aforementioned building blocks allow citizen developers in your organization to help the IT team with application development. The citizen developers will likely be business users who know exactly the challenge they are trying to solve, so they are well placed to do the job of creating the app.

However, you don’t want them operating as a Shadow IT unit. So, the experience matrix provides the guardrails you need to ensure that they don’t go off piste. You can grant and restrict platform capabilities based on users’ skills so you can rest assured that citizen developers aren’t going to make a mistake, like accidentally deleting all your customer data!

3. Governance for end-users of the application

As well as setting permissions for developers, you also want to have the ability to ensure that end users only see information and activities they are cleared for. The ‘Interactions’ element in the Bizagi Matrix helps to ensure proper governance as you can assign which tasks and actions each individual user or ‘Persona’ is allowed to carry out.

For example, an IT Agent, IT Manager and Employee within a business will all have different Interactions they are allowed to perform. Each user will have a different experience based on their needs and responsibilities.

4. Enhanced collaboration

A common issue with traditional application development is a miscommunication between the business requirements needed from the app and the IT specifications of how to build it. IT may not fully understand the problem they are trying to solve, and it’s difficult receiving constant early feedback from the business end-users because it draws out implementation times.

The Experience Matrix offers a new, shared and familiar place for business and IT to work together as a Fusion Team, made up of business users and experts with more technical knowledge from the IT department. The simple and easy-to-use interface clearly communicates expected behaviours with members of your Fusion Team.

Gartner reports that Fusion Teams can progress 2.5 times faster than centralized, sequential efforts, so you can guarantee that you’ll be able to get your app developed faster by pooling your resources in a Fusion Team. This is certainly the case in the Experience Matrix as they can define how the app will work in a simple view, then generate a customizable app in a simple click.

5. Create personalized experiences

Personalization is key to creating enterprise apps. The low-code/no-code approach to application development certainly makes the process easier. But it can leave you with generic apps that don’t do exactly what you want, or don’t even incorporate your organization’s branding.

The Experience Matrix allows you to establish different experiences for different users based on their preferred working methods, the information they need to access and the actions they need to take. Once you’ve generated the experiences in the Matrix, the app is ready for UI/UX customization in the Bizagi App Designer, so you can create a fully customized enterprise application best suited to your needs.

6. Enhanced reporting

Knowledge is power. It’s easier to enhance both the user and customer experience when you have a clear view of what is happening within your app. In the Experience Matrix, you can use embedded external reports from tools such as Power BI, related to each Persona so you have a clear view of how the app is being used.

7. Auditability and Visibility

Governance is of vital importance in enterprise app building. Organizations need to be able to achieve agility while creating new apps, but still need to maintain standards if you choose to scale up. The Bizagi Experience Matrix offers support for centralized and federated centers of excellence. It facilitates audibility and visibility with detailed timelines. It also offers process traceability options, so you always remain in control and can prove compliance as and when you need to at the click of a button.
